This is a project I think I really want to take on, but I wonder what you all want to see here.
The concept album would be essentially a multi-movement Theme and Variation project in 8-bit/Chiptune style. It’d be called “The Adventures of Thema in Variation,” with the long term goal being that the various variations that I employ would paint out different gameplay segments that possibly would exist in this fake game.
Currently, here is what I have:
Theme – Opening/Title Screen
Variation I – “The Forests,” or at least some sort of music that would play while the hero ‘Thema’ is travelling through some areas.
Variation II – “Storm,” or “Battle,” though this Variation isn’t quite done yet.
Other possible variations that I might make will try to explore music composition techniques, but might paint out scenes like towns, cutscenes, or otherwise. Sorta depends on where I wanna go with it. Potentially a project like this could have upwards of eight to twelve variation segments, or more, meaning a longer overall song/album!
Take a listen to the track below, and let me know what you think in the comments. 🙂
The Forests bit sounds more over-worldy or air-ship sounding to me, but it’s good regardless.
My only real complaint is that the Battle music doesn’t quite have as strong a hook to it as you’d expect from fighting music. It has more of an “We’re in a Rush!” type vibe than “Enemy Encounter!” if that makes sense.
To be fair, the names of the variations are more or less things I’m coming up with after I’m writing music, and based on more or less a personal reaction to what sort of scene I’m hearing in my head.
It’s not exactly like I’m going in thinking, “This movement is going to be the fight music!” That’s why I’m currently sticking with relatively generic sounding Variation names for now anyways.
